Unless you’ve lived in complete isolation for the last decade, you are familiar with the term millennial. Millennials are the generation born between 1980 and 2000 and right now, they are the majority of our workforce!
This is reason enough to learn more about them and to adapt your management to this generation.
Here are some facts and tips we believe you need to know if you want to work with millennials.
They respect structure, but appreciate flexibility
Millennials like having a certain structure. This means that they like to have precise deadlines and sets of rules, but not to the point where they don’t have any freedom left.
Tip: Provide them what they need and get amazing results! You should set clear deadlines, but make sure that they have enough time to do the task at hand. You should give structure and demand structure, so that everyone is happy and does everything on time.
They appreciate diversity
Millennials are used to meeting new people, travelling and working in diverse teams. They are open to collaborating in ways that other generations didn’t necessarily want.
Tip: Create a positive work environment and create diverse teams! In order to get the best results from your employees, why not group them in teams that feel right for them!
Millenials are eager to learn
They are a generation that believes in working on yourself, making yourself better and learning throughout your career. This makes them great employees as they are willing to pick up new skills along the way.
Tip: Invest in them, but ask for more responsibility in return. What you should do is invest in your employees, give them opportunities to learn and grow in new ways. This will make them more loyal and will provide them with new motivation, which is why you can expect more responsibility on their part as well.
They network and are overall well-connected
They are always on their phones, they have a strong social media presence and know their way around technology.
Tip: You can really use this to your advantage. What can be better than having employees that know how to manage your social media accounts! You can also expect them to help out with growing your customer base, managing emails and so much more!
It’s not difficult managing millennials, it’s just different. Millennials can bring new ideas and new strengths to your business, as long as you know how to appreciate their skill sets.
